It is estimated that over 1.8 million tonnes of electrical and electronic waste is created every year. Aside from the sheer amount of waste involved, the main problem is that much of the equipment has parts which are made of hazardous and toxic materials. These have a long life and are not biodegradeable meaning computer disposal is now of major concern to our environment.

Thankfully the government have now introduced legislation regarding electronic waste disposal. The WEEE Directive aims to minimise the amount of wastage going to the landfill sites and aid in the improvement of recycling and recovery rates. It is aimed at companies, manufacturers and importers of electrical and electronics equipment and if they do not conform to the regulations they can be prosecuted.
